Lama Kunsang was born in Ngari, close to Mt. Kailash and fled Tibet as a child. After learning the art of thangka and mandala painting, he joined the Drikung Kagyu Institute in Dehra Dun, India. In the following seven years, he completed his studies as monk in the field of buddhist philosophy, Tibetan poetry and Tibetan grammar and became teacher in these subjects. Afterwards, he did a Three-Year Retreat according to the Drikung Kagyu Tradition and graduated as a “Master of Retreat”.
Lama Kunsang was then a part of the “Science meets Dharma” project and lived from 2001 until 2005 at the Tibet Institute in Rikon, Switzerland. In 2005, Drikung Kagyu Dorjie Ling Center was inaugurated by His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche with Lama Kunsang as the leading Lama of this center and under the blessing of His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche.
